End of the Month Chaos - October Edition

The Month That Looked at September and Said, "Hold my pumpkin spice."
October didn't arrive. October kicked the door open, dumped half a year's worth of deadlines on the table, pointed dramatically at the calendar, and announced: "We're getting ahead for the holidays."
And somehow... we did. Mostly. Possibly through caffeine. Possibly through sheer stubbornness. The jury is still out.
The Great Year-End Push
October marked the beginning of my annual attempt to convince November and December to behave themselves. As always, November and December refused. So instead, we rolled up our sleeves and got to work.
Launch packets were assembled. Promotional materials were created. Schedules were built. Social media content was wrangled into submission. Book promotions were prepared. Platforms were updated. Future chaos was organized into neat little folders and assigned deadlines.
The goal is simple: work harder now so I can slow down later. Whether this is wisdom or delusion remains to be seen.
Small Bites Is Almost Here
Preparations continued for the Small Bites Short Story Contest, which kicks off on November 1st. This year's theme is: "Things Unsaid".
Which means somewhere, right now, writers across the community are plotting emotional damage, devastating revelations, awkward family secrets, unexpected confessions, and at least three endings that will leave readers staring at a wall for a while. As tradition demands.
The contest runs through January 31st, and I'm already excited to see what everyone creates.
House Mayhem & Milestones
Back at IUPH headquarters, the usual controlled chaos continued. Formatting projects marched across my desk. Graphics were dragged kicking and screaming into existence before being shoved out into the world with a nod and a sigh. Metadata misbehaved... there may have been threats of banishment until it calmed down, but let’s not dwell on that.
Newsletters were drafted. Websites were updated. Authors launched books. And readers discovered new favorites. Technology occasionally questioned its purpose in life.
The house remains alive, growing, busy, and fueled by caffeine, creativity, and the occasional chaos gremlin. So, you know, business as usual.
The Personal Chaos Corner
(a.k.a. Life Had Additional Notes)
October reminded me that no matter how carefully we plan, life sometimes decides to rewrite the outline. This month brought unexpected challenges, difficult days, and a reminder that some things matter more than deadlines.
With the passing of my Mom this month, I was once again reminded that stories don't just live in books. They live in families. They live in memories. They live in the stories we share and the people we carry with us.
In keeping a promise that makes perfect sense to anyone who had ever met my Mom, I purchased a vintage camper cookie jar decorated with flamingos as her final resting container. Somewhere, my mother is laughing. I know she would have approved.
If nothing else, October made sure it won't be forgotten.
Final Thoughts
The end-of-year sprint is officially underway. The books are launching. The contest is waiting. The day-to-day operations continue unabated. And the flamingo camper has entered the storyline.
October was busy.
October was productive.
October was personally devastating.
October was a reminder that planning helps, community matters, stories endure, and life continues to surprise us.
And November?
November is already standing outside holding a stack of manuscripts and making suspiciously direct eye contact.
The chaos continues.
But so do I.
