Her courage defied history’s silence

Woman of Many Names is a deeper look into a woman who helped shaped the history of our Nation. Nancy Ward had ties to Daniel Boone and George Washington, including having saved the latter's life (and, it's believed, vice versa). (A letter written by Ward to Washington was later found in Thomas Jefferson's artifacts.) Also known as Nanyehi, she also foretold one of the great American tragedies, the Trail of Tears. Nancy Ward was the negotiator of the sale of Kentucky to the Transylvania Company by Daniel Boone, as well as savior to countless settlers and pioneers who helped form the course of American history.  Ward sat on numerous influential treaty councils and led many land transfers. She was declared by the U.S. government as last princess and prophetess of the Cherokee Nation. Today she is looked upon as a role model akin to Joan of Arc, for young girls. An America250 patriot marker has been installed in Benton, Tennessee, where Ward has also been memorialized by a federal historical marker that was placed by the Daughters of the American Revolution.  And the late Elia Kazan - who The New York Times called one of the most honored and influential directors in Broadway and Hollywood history and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame - said that his biggest regret was not making a movie about Nancy Ward. All this and she's not even in the history books!
