In a nation silenced by fear, a boy’s poem becomes an act of rebellion.
A 12-year-old writes a gentle poem. His regime sentences him to death. For fans of Daniel Silva, Brad Thor, and John le Carré — a high-stakes international thriller grounded in one of today's most urgent human rights crises. In Myanmar, ruled by a military junta that kills without mercy, hope itself is a crime. When twelve-year-old VIKA's simple poem about hope goes viral, the regime arrests him — and sentences the child to death for treason. The uproar reaches KAE ZHANG, leader of Article 5, an elite international organization that has fought torture and political repression in the world's most dangerous places. Now Kae and her team must do the impossible: extract one child from the heart of a military-criminal empire — while being hunted through the jungle by the junta's most feared weapon. They call him the METAL VIPER. Perfect for readers of international thrillers, human rights fiction, political suspense, Southeast Asia spy novels, female-protagonist action thrillers, and books inspired by real-world authoritarian regimes. Article 5: Kae Zhang Series Book 1 — More books featuring Kae Zhang and the Article 5 team are coming.

EDITORIAL REVIEWS
"An emotionally powerful journey through one of the most repressive lands on the planet, Metal Viper immerses us in the raw, poignantly human side of the human rights struggle. Lovett and Schultz have crafted both a gripping tale and a compelling reminder of the wrenching toll of tyranny." - Eliot Pattison, Edgar Award–winning author of The Skull Mantra [Metal Viper] is a tense, timely thriller with heart and a standout heroic lead. Our Verdict - BUY IT." - Kirkus Review “Freedom rarely disappears all at once. It erodes quietly, as fear normalizes silence and institutions stop protecting the vulnerable. International Bridges to Justice turns fear to hope, with local defenders who push back where it counts most: at the point of detention and in the courtroom, insisting on due process and humane treatment. Many actors advance human rights in different ways, but without effective defense, the promise of rights can remain only words." - Karen Tse, Founder and CEO International Bridges to Justice “This thriller is such an important story to tell, to shed light on the people who risk their lives as they confront cruelty and inhumanity in the name of justice. A powerful reminder of the good in humanity and that we can all do something to amplify it.. As one character Tiffany said, “If not us, then who?” - Birute Regine, author of, Iron Butterflies: Women Transforming Themselves and the World "Metal Viper shines a rare — and much-needed — light on the dark realities of one of the most brutal military dictatorships in the world." — Richard Reoch, former Global Media Chief, Amnesty International [Metal Viper is]"Urgent, haunting, and relentlessly suspenseful" - Prairies Book Review "This is not a genre I ever go to but I went to this one out of curiosity over how a despotic regime deals with the pretense of human rights. I was rewarded with the several dimensions this book so deftly confronts and balances. Yes, it is a thriller and at the same time a spiritual journey with memorable characters. In its way, the narrative is a triumph of compassion against which injustice has no defense: - Norm Levine, Poet, essayist, retired pharmacist

The Viper’s Breath
Ingredients
-
2 oz gin or vodka
Gin = sharper, more botanical bite. Vodka = cleaner, lets the smoke shine. -
1 oz fresh lime juice

¾ oz ginger syrup
(Equal parts sugar + water + sliced ginger simmered 10 minutes, then strained.) -
½ oz smoked tea (Lapsang Souchong), cooled
-
Chili-sugar rim
(2 parts sugar, 1 part chili powder, pinch of salt.)
Instructions
-
Rim a tall rocks glass or coupe with lime, then dip into the chili-sugar mixture.
-
Add gin/vodka, lime juice, ginger syrup, and smoked tea to a shaker with ice.
-
Shake hard — this drink likes aggression.
